Home Alone 2 Locations in NYC

With trampolines, gadgets galore and plenty of Christmas decorations, if the huge toy store in the middle of New York seemed to good to be true, that's because it might just be. Here's all the behind the scenes secrets of how the makers of Home Alone 2 made Duncan's Toy Chest one of the most desirable locations in the world. And what’s a New York City Christmas movie without Rockefeller Plaza and the most famous of all the Christmas trees in NYC?

The Murphy house, where the mouthy young Mitch Murphy lives is also located nearby at 656 Lincoln Avenue. The filming for ‘Home Alone’ took place both on location and on set in a number of venues across the state of Illinois, including Chicago, Winnetka, Highland Park, and Oak Park. Principal photography began in February of 1990 but was wracked with production issues after distributor Warner took issue with the film’s ballooning budget. However, 21st Century Fox stepped in with principal photography concluding in May 1990. Kevin rigs the townhouse with booby traps, catches Harry and Marv in the process of robbing the store, and breaks its front window to set off the burglar alarm. After taking their picture, he lures them to the townhouse where they repeatedly injure themselves in the traps.

The true luxury hotel was presented as the most attractive and the best hotel in New York City. The story line of ‘Home Alone’ follows the mischievously resourceful little boy Kevin McCallister, who has a proclivity for creating trouble, much to the chagrin of his harried mother and absent-minded father. Kevin’s entire extended family is taking a vacation to Paris, France. However, trouble is afoot in the neighborhood as a couple of robbers start casing the houses, with their eye on the McCallister house next.

It's located at West 120th Street out in Harlem, which is about 75 blocks from Carnegie Hall. Completed back in 1888, the Rookery was designated a National Historic Landmark back in 1975. What viewers see in the movie is the beautiful arched entrance, which of course remains just as it was back in 1992. Kevin finds the store of his dreams in Duncan's Toy Chest, a building that isn't actually found in New York. Those well-versed in historic buildings may recognize this as the Rookery Building, a historic landmark in Chicago.

Joe Pesci really got burned during one of the action scenes.

It’s here that Kevin faces off against the concierge whom he fools into thinking he’s armed and dangerous by recording snippets of an old movie on his Talkboy. Recently, Disney announced a reboot of the Home Alone franchise for its Disney Plus channel. But a Home Alone 2 set in today’s New York would have a completely different feel. Polaroid stopped manufacturing film for its original instant cameras in 2008. When tourists abandoned Chinatown in the wake of 9/11, Quong Yuen Shing and Co., in business since 1891, closed down.

The Plaza Hotel is a landmark 20-story luxury hotel and condominium apartment building in the Midtown Manhattan neighborhood in the borough of Manhattan, New York City. This is also the hotel where Donald Trump makes his cameo appearance in the lobby when Kevin asks him for directions. At the time of filming he owned the hotel and insisted on being in it. The interior shots of the store were filmed in the Uptown Theater in Chicago.

11 Rob's House Is A Set

Kevin watches as Marv ends up triggering a trap where a running lawnmower falls on his head . In February 1991, the Los Angeles Times reported that John Hughes was to sign a six-picture deal with 20th Century Fox; among the projects was a sequel to Home Alone. In May 1991, Culkin was paid $4.5 million plus 5 percent of the film's gross to appear in the sequel, compared to $110,000 for the original.

The Rockefeller Plaza is the last of Home Alone 2 film locations and it serves as the perfect backdrop for one of the movie’s best scenes. In the story, the townhouse is located in New York —however, this is the only one, of the Home Alone 2 film locations, to be shot in Los Angeles. Kevin makes a 911 call from an Upper West Side phone booth and tells the dispatcher that the thieves who robbed Duncan's Toy Chest will be in the park at 95th Street. "Look for fireworks. They've got a gun." Then he slips on ice, and the dastardly duo walks him into the park. Ultimately, the Pigeon Lady throws feed onto the very sticky Sticky Bandits, swarms of pigeons peck away, and Kevin is able to set off fireworks to alert the police to their presence. In the bag of stolen money, he leaves Polaroids of the guys at the toy store as well as the tape recording of Marv explaining the plan.

Macaulay Culkin's brother appears in the film.

The money is delivered to the hospital as intended, and Mr. Duncan finds out Kevin was responsible. Kevin's uncle Rob and aunt Georgette have a townhouse on 95th Street between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue. He finds the address in his dad's contacts, which were in the backpack, but after seeking refuge there earlier, realizes that no one is home and the house is undergoing a gut renovation.

Winnetka is one of the wealthiest regions in the entire United States in terms of household income, and with its placid suburban character is the ideal backdrop for a movie like ‘Home Alone’. The region has also served as a filming location for several other high profile Hollywood movies including ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’, ‘Ocean’s Twelve’, ‘Meet the Parents’, and ‘Sixteen Candles’. Harry and Marv are by Wollman Rink, at the southern end of Central Park. Marv is skating while Harry is reading the paper and plotting how to get some cash. During the holidays, Harry says, "the only stores that are going to have cash on hand are those that deal in moderate priced goods." He points to a full-page ad for Duncan's Toy Chest.

We aren’t just seeing them through Kevin’s eyes, but recalling our own younger selves. Using 9/11 as a metaphor for the rupture between innocence and experience can be imprecise and overwrought. Still, seeing Kevin McAllister smiling out at the panorama of New York City from the observation deck evokes a feeling of wonder that wells up from a place deeper than just Macaulay Culkin’s performance. He has a love of movies and television, having enjoyed them for more than twenty years.

On Christmas morning, a truckload of free gifts arrives at the McCallisters' hotel room, sent from a grateful Mr. Duncan for foiling the robbery. Kevin reconciles with his family, and goes to Central Park to give one of his turtledoves to the pigeon lady, cementing their friendship. The movie was created for "Home Alone," and the production team did the same thing for the sequel. The scene was instead filmed at the Four Seasons Hotel in Chicago. Duncan's Toy Chest isn't real, but it was likely inspired by a famous NYC store.

11 Duncan's Toy Chest Is A Building In Chicago

This is the most heartwarming location of the movie since Kevin wants to help children who are sick and having a difficult time have a happier holiday. Kevin walks around the city and passes by Radio City Music Hall. This is a famous and beloved part of NYC and is still standing today, with many tourists and residents alike attending performances here.

The Diner still exists, it’s called Empire Diner and it’s located in Chalsea, on the West side of Manhattan. We all have in mind the iconic image of Kevin sticking his head out of the cab as he crosses this bridge. However, this building is not a hospital, but a part of Columbia's Teachers College.

Even people who’ve never been to New York City have a strong connection to the park, in part because of the film’s central character, Kevin McAllister , and his relationship with the park-dwelling Pigeon Lady . In one scene, Kevin hides from the inept criminal duo Harry and Marv by hopping in a trunk on the back of a hansom cab at Bethesda Terrace. As the so-called “Sticky Bandits” search for him, Kevin is pulled away toward Bow Bridge and Cherry Hill.

The address given in the movie is 51 West 95th Street, which indeed is a real brownstone, and it actually does look a bit like the location in the film. However, it's certainly not exact, owing to the fact that the house isn't actually in New York. One of the most iconic images of the movie is the zoom-out shot of Kevin standing on top of the south World Trade Center.

LOCATION DETAILS

Everything about the film, including the hilarious performance of villainous duo Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern, the charming Macaulay Culkin, and the memorable soundtrack by the legendary John Williams is iconic. Other filming locations include the World Trade Center, the New York Subway and Central park, while in Chicago, scenes were shot in the Hilton Hotel and at O'Hare International Airport. In an attempt to prevent Marv and Rob from robbing the toy store, Kevin lures the two criminals to one of Home Alone 2’s final filming locations—his Uncle’s brownstone. The treehouse where Kevin escapes to during the film’s climax was constructed especially for the movie.

The Rookery, found on 209 S LaSalle St, was dressed up to look like an impressive toy store for the movie. Today the building features lots of businesses with a US Bank and a Brooks Brothers standing out on the ground floor. After receiving some words of wisdom from the woman, Kevin is inspired to make up for his past mistakes by thwarting Marv and Harry’s plan to rob the toy store.

The production staff created another fake old-timey movie for the sequel.

Two soundtrack albums of the film were released on November 20, 1992, with one featuring Williams' score and the other featuring contemporary Christmas songs featured in the film. Ten years later, a 2-disc Deluxe Edition of the film score soundtrack was released. The McCallister family is preparing to spend Christmas in Miami, and gathers at Peter and Kate's Chicago home. Their youngest son, Kevin, views Florida as contradictory to Christmas, due to its tropical climate and lack of Christmas trees.

Queensboro Bridge

In Home Alone 2, Kevin hits up all the good spots in New York but some locations are a little different these days. There have now been six movies in the Home Alone franchise, with the latest, Home Sweet Home Alone, now available to watch on Disney+. You can find the full list of the New York locations and where to find them here. He stumbles upon the now iconic Duncan's Toy Chest in the center of New York City where he meets the adorable and philanthropic owner Mr. Duncan . It’s here where Kevin is finally united with his mother and the two share a very touching moment together. This shop was located in Manhattan and the name was eventually changed to Good Fortune Gifts.

The Rockefeller Plaza is the last of Home Alone 2 film locations and it serves as the perfect backdrop for one of the movie’s best scenes. DISCOVER NYC

You get the sense, again, that this is a smart-yet-naive Midwestern kid having a fun day out but at the same time getting a little bit awed by the big city even from so many stories up. At the airport, Kevin looks out at Long Island City's Pepsi-Cola sign and the East River skyline, and the screen flashes to and from various cityscape shots. We get a sense of the enormity of the place and the tiny-ness of this child. At first, Kevin says nervously, "Oh no, my family's in Florida and I'm in New York." Then he smiles.

Little do they know that Kevin is no ordinary kid, and they are about to walk into a whole new world of pain inside Kevin’s heavily booby-trapped home in some truly uproarious sequences. At the Miami airport, security tells Kevin's parents it's unlikely he'll be anywhere but still stuck in Chicago. The camera pans to the South Street Seaport's erstwhile Fulton Fish Market . A backpack-toting Kevin crosses the street; meanwhile a white truck makes a turn, honks at him, and rolls up the back to reveal Harry and Marv.

"There's nobody dumb enough to knock off a toy store on Christmas Eve," Harry jibes. Marv answers, "Oh, yes there is," and gestures to both of them. The next morning, the family oversleeps and must rush to the airport. Kevin is with them, but he becomes separated from them while carrying Peter's bag and accidentally boards a flight to New York City. Upon arrival, he decides to tour the city, but becomes frightened by a homeless woman tending to pigeons in Central Park.

But even before that, viewers see Kevin walking up some stairs into the complex itself with the two iconic buildings proudly standing in the background. The entire movie was filmed across Chicago and New York, despite the majority of the story being based in NYC. The actual location used for the scenes in the film was in Universal Studios on Brownstone Street! They just used an address here in NYC, that Hollywood trickery. After finally arriving to New York, Kevin’s mom Kate (Played by Catherine O’Hara) goes on a desperate search for her son and catches a cab to Times Square. While it’s one of Home Alone 2’s briefest use of NYC locations, the setting is still a memorable one.

Production

It broke the short-lived record set one week earlier by Bram Stoker's Dracula for having the largest November opening weekend. The film went on to hold this record until 1994 when it was taken by Interview with the Vampire. Additionally, it achieved the highest opening weekend for a Chris Columbus film and would hold that record until it was surpassed by Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in 2001. It started off better than Home Alone, grossing $100 million in 24 days compared to 33 days for the original.

The minimalistic designs of villas boast a contemporary elegance that exemplified its sophistication. The Plaza Hotel has appeared in a well-known film “Home alone 2”. The viewers had a chance to see the hotel not only from the outside, but from the inside as well.

However, many of the interior shots of the house, particularly the basement and the attic were recreated on set in the New Trier High School. Other filming locations in Winnetka include a Panera Bread Company establishment at 940 Greenbay Road, as well as the Hubbard Woods Metro Station in Gage Street. That's not to say you couldn't visit NYC and be amazed inside a mega toy store. Formerly on Fifth Avenue, the store provided the setting for the famous Tom Hanks piano scene in the movie Big. Deciding to explore the city, one of Kevin’s first stops is Radio City Music Hall, where he takes pictures of this famous music venue with his Polaroid camera. Radio City Music Hall is easily one of the most legendary Home Alone 2 filming locations in NYC where Kevin is running around sightseeing.

SCENE

When Insider's Jason Guerrasio interviewed director Chris Columbus in 2020, he said Trump bullied his way into the cameo in the first place. Culkin seems to approve of removing a contentious celebrity cameo from the movie. The Plaza is one of the main settings of the film as Kevin decides to stay there after accidentally going to New York by himself. It was created specifically as a prop for the film by Tiger Electronics, but according to Vanity Fair, the company was allowed to sell a real version once it came out. Rochelle’s later appeared in the scene in which Kate McCallister (Catherine O-Hara) received a phone call from the Miami Police informing her that Kevin had tried to check in to The Plaza Hotel in New York .

National Register of Historic Places, so it doesn't look that different from the 1992 setting of the movie. The movie was released just nine years prior to the tragic attacks that took these buildings down. The site is now home to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, complete with the beautiful and wonderfully thoughtful memorial, Reflecting Absence.

Queensboro Bridge

It’s at this Home Alone 2 film location where Marv is trying to to skate, while Harry is reading the newspaper. The Stanley Hotel appears in a very popular and funny film “Dumb and dumber”, but the hotel is shown under different name as the Danbury Hotel. If you were wondering where was ‘Home Alone’ filmed, here’s everything we know. Kevin springs by the Van Cleef and Arpels store on Fifth Avenue, and hurriedly stops to buy a few necklaces off a street vendor. Notlostin New York, but independent and having a grand old time. While the film featured the first film's theme song "Somewhere in My Memory", it also contained its own theme entitled "Christmas Star".

Unfortunately, this Home Alone 2 location has since closed down. In this brief scene, we see Kevin leaving from Quong Yuen Shing with firecrackers—which are sure to go off before the film’s conclusion. After once again being confronted by Harry and Marv, Kevin is chased through Central Park and we’re introduced to another one of Home Alone 2’s locations—the Bethesda fountain. You’ll feel like you’re in a movie yourself when skating at this famous rink. In the newspaper, he finds an ad for “Duncan’s Toy Chest” and the two hatch a plan to rob the store on Christmas Eve. This is also where Marv snatches a scarf and earmuffs off fellow skaters.

Macaulay Culkin's brother appears in the film.

LaGuardia Airport does look different today since the movie was released in 1992. According to Insider, there has been a renovation of Terminal B, which will change the appearance of the airport as well. The movie Home Alone 2 was filmed in the Plaza Hotel in New York City. Columbus claims he was going to cut the scene but test audiences cheered at his appearance. Macaulay Culkin has since endorsed a petition to have Trump's cameo removed from the movie. Though the set looks completely real, unfortunately Duncan's Toy Chest is fake, and it is not a real place in New York or any other city.

Sure this game isn't for everyone and might not be for you, but the charm is still there. All that quirky dialog, funny characters and ease of use makes this an animal crossing game but not a main line game. @Kaze_Memaryu You know it's called a spin-off and not a mainline AC game, this isn't supposed to be New Leaf 2.0.

Graphic Designer Jobs in Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands

I listened to nintendoworldreport's Radio Free Nintendo podcast, and they slammed this game for lack of difficulty, no persistence, and monetization with the amiibo cards. Probably just wait awhile since there are other 3DS titles I still need to get (Tomodachi Life, etc.). I at least appreciate what the AC team were trying to do for something different like this and the board game since AC never really had a spin off before, but unlike the main games I'm not rushing out to buy them ASAP.

nintendo new 3ds system animal crossing home designer

Real life also moves on, and I can't make the necessary time to do it all over a second time, so just visiting occasionally will suit me fine. Apologies to all other commentators for us going off topic. The charm isn't lost, and that's not really what I meant to begin with, since that charm mostly comes from the plethora of characters. But the spirit of the entire Animal Crossing franchise was to not tell you what to do, but leave everything to your whim. @Spectra_Twilight I call nonsense on your statement I'm afraid.

So the fact that you guys have this game is a 7 instead of a 1 is quite mind boggling. It sounds dreadful in every sense of the word - and I sunk 100+ hours into ACNL. Seems like this can go two ways; either you're OK with the ability to create whatever you want, or you want some challenge in how you go about it. The former will love this game, and the latter will probably turn it down. Although each one gives you a challenge to face - such as creating a home of a certain colour, feel or tone - the game doesn't judge your performance in any way. Mind you I still think amiibo festival is going to be a very lackluster game, but it's probably going to have some of that AC spirit in it. The AC development team is very passionate about this franchise, they aren't going to create a game in the franchise without a "soul". I personally feel like the AC titles on the way are an attempt to bring others that may like the game style but not the time sink on board.

Atleast its playable unlike how many devs don't even make their game playable. Basically, Happy Home Designer is the polar opposite of Animal Crossing, and even a spinoff shouldn't twist and mangle the base concept beyond recognition. It's not a bad game, but it wants to be an Animal Crossing game, and as that, it fails miserably to captivate any of the charm that the series is known for. ACNL does this too with the real time clock and gradual upgrades, but has plenty goals for you to pursuit along the way. That review sums up what i pretty much thought of the game.

nintendo new 3ds system animal crossing home designer

Ugh, even thinking of this as "sequel" to New Leaf is nauseating. It's like they removed all of your sense of accomplishment and purpose in life from this "game". This has more in common with a colouring book than New Leaf. At least the coloring book knows it's place in life, this title doesn't even know what it wants out of life.

Someone call me when they start making the good stuff again. My only beef with the game is that I would have liked to see the HHA point system be an option in the game for those who want more of a challenge. "Quick, piecemeal, and incomplete experiences, and less full-blown titles." This seems like it should be a cheap download-only title, not a full retail release. I'll bite if it ever gets a steep discount (50% or more off the price).

nintendo new 3ds system animal crossing home designer

This way I guarantee myself the bundle in case I miss it at a better retailer somehow. Even the Retro 3 pack is back in stock at GameStop, as is the Xenoblade Collector's Edition. Gold Mario bundle with Super Mario Maker at Walmart. I could go on, but bottom line is this- amiibo are everywhere but no, it doesn't seem to be common knowledge. Also, have you even played this game yet, or are you just listening to reviews of the game?

So far ive seen a lot of other reviews other than just this one. Others such as gamexplain say this game gets very repetitive after a good while of constantly creating just houses and with that making the type of themed houses you want to create on the inside. And I can definitely see what they mean by that, personally this AC just isnt for me. Wii U may be dead, but I'm spending a whole lot of money to play games on it.

I spend enough time in story of seasons I can't juggle another high maintenance game...stopped playing tomodachi life for the same reason. @Captain_Gonru I noticed the remodeling last time I was in Target last Thursday - all the new Skylanders stuff, on display 4 days too early - kind of shoved all the Ntineod stuff out of the way. They still had room for the $99 red Wii Mini though. We've purchased the last two Animal Crossing games because we bought into the hype and both times we failed to get into the game, and both times we felt regret after buying. I like the presence of Villager in Smash and the AC track on Mario Kart 8....and the puzzle in Mii Plaza is cool with it being a snapshot of all the characters.

The fact that the game appears to lack challenge will bother some, others may welcome the opportunity to challenge their own ingenuity. Check out some of the YouTube player postings of this game, many clearly have challenged themselves and appear to be enjoying it. As a mature woman with my own decorative preferences I found the "theme" restrictions and unsolicited snippy comments from the HHA in Wild World annoying. Thankfully this aspect was moved into the background in New Leaf, and you could get your home assessed by the HHA, or you could ignore them. The player was left alone to display his or her own ingenuity with the furniture. And, Oh boy, didn't the real innovators display ingenuity in designing their home interiors and town gardens!

"New" Nintendo 3DS XL Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer TOP IPS RARE

You may think its a stupid spinoff after all of your time playing it, but its made 40 million dollars in 12 days, and is well loved all over the world. I've just checked my Activity Log on New Leaf and I'm staggered to find I played over 1700 hours over 18 months. I would still be playing it intermittently if I didn't have to cope with animal residents' quakingly begging me "never leave us alone this long again". I'm probably an idiot, but I really can't cope with that as well as real life problems, and it would be great if Nintendo could adjust this "must play daily" approach next time. Showcase is already one of the fastest selling Nintendo games, and i believe is tied for the fastest selling AC game. Even 20% of Wii U owners buying it would be huge- barely half of U owners own mario kart or smash.

nintendo new 3ds system animal crossing home designer

Mario Maker and Xenoblade will try to save it, but this was a very bad half year for Nintendo. This game is as much an AC game as any Mario Kart/Sports is a Mario game. They aren't mainline games, but they are part of the "spirit" of the Super Mario franchise. They finally do something new and people call the game trash before they even try it. Go look at lets plays on YouTube if you need proof. People whined when new super Mario Bros 2 came out because it was too much of the same.

Creative Designer

@Hy8ogen To be honest, you might be right there. I've made her aware of its less-than-stellar reception - the only thing I can do now is show her some gameplay and let her decide. I'd hate to get her a crappy birthday present, but if she chooses for herself then I can sleep relatively guilt free. I toyed with the idea of re-starting, but I love my original town and don't want to mess about building things up again.

Luxury Homes for Sale in Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands - FAQ

Honestly I'd probably pay $20 for it at most from what I've seen so far though, and I've always been an AC fan. At least the game doesn't totally throw you in without any idea of what to design. I'm glad it has at least a little bit of guidance. Well, I'm getting this game via New 3DS bundle and I have been thinking about this game for quite a while. If I happen to dislike it...at least I still get to keep the New 3DS...

Click on listings to see photos, amenities, price and much more.

One of the fun aspects of New Leaf was visiting other towns and homes via the dream suite to gawp over the brilliant ideas of other players. I'm really looking forward to HHD - got the bundle pre-ordered, as well as a few packs of amiibo cards. After a really long day at work, I'm fine with coming home to play a happy game that encourages me and doesn't provide any real challenge. This game falls into the chill out and relax pile, and there's nothing wrong with that.

I just don't know how long the game would take to start getting repetitious though since I am a big fan of the series I think that wouldn't be an issue for quite a long time. I'll get the game I think, just not on launch day. I used to be a fan of AC but this spin-off games are a clear indicator that Nintendo is just milking this franchise to death since they know how popular AC is. Instead of taking their time to make a huge robust AC New Leaf sequel for Wii U, they made a stupid board game that nobody asked for and it was created only to sell Amiibo. Will skip all of that of course and since Star Fox 0 was delayed as well ... Well, what an awful holiday lineup for Nintendo this year when we're supposed to have both Star Fox and Zelda.

Item specifics

So it seems to me that this game offers a little bit more of that popular feature, though it has been geared at a level to attract younger players. I shall get this game and hopefully enjoy it for the spin-off it is, and it will be lovely to encounter familiar animal faces. The BIG draw for me is the fact that one does not HAVE to play on a daily basis. It was said of the other Animal Crossing games that you could play for ten minutes a day and still enjoy it.

Alternatively, if a character is showing off your completed design, tap the camera icon that appears on the touch screen. Customize your character’s appearance by selecting a face and hair style. When complete, select confirm and press the A Button. If you want to make changes to a project you’ve already completed, just visit your former client via the Client List and change their home design. But you can only do this while visiting your client during the day .

I ask you this, what is a true animal crossing spin-off for you? If it's just ACNL 2.0 with HHD in it, than it's not a spin-off. Some of the best games ever made have sold very poorly. @dkxcalibur Yeah I really like the cartoony look of the AC world in MK8 and it's 4 seasons, and wouldn't mind messing around in it in a proper adventure type game in there, but Nitnod seems content to get small. And any thoughts they may have had of getting large are probably now irreparably crushed w/ the Zelda U and Starfox delays. I adore New Leaf and loved the GCN original—for some reason didn't take to the DS version and hated City Folk—but I think I'm going to pass.

They even said they made Amiibo Festival simply because they wanted to have AC amiibos, another cash grab. I'll wait for New Leaf 2 or whatever the next main AC game is. Hey that's great 😇 I went back after playing the MK8 update and ended up downloading NL so I could start a new town. Plot resetting atm, nightmare, but only Margie and Paula to get moved in now. Plus with the ability to build 400+ homes, the ability to upgrade said homes multiple times , 83 home locations with 4 seasons each, with the ability to use tiles/rugs gives many hours of playtime and creative freedom.
